The UTC Method
To accurately calculate travel across time zones, all times are first converted to a universal standard. This calculator uses Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) as its baseline. This avoids confusion with Daylight Saving Time changes.
- Departure in UTC: Your local departure date and time are converted to their UTC equivalent.
- Add Travel Time: The duration of the first flight leg is added to the UTC departure time to find the UTC arrival time.
- Display Local Arrival: This new UTC time is then converted to the local time of the arrival airport's time zone.
- Add Layover Time: If there's a layover, its duration is added to the UTC arrival time to get the next UTC departure time.
- Repeat: Steps 2-4 are repeated for every leg of the journey.
Your Itinerary Example
Based on your inputs, here's a step-by-step reconstruction that shows how the total travel time was produced:
Departure: You depart at Mon, Dec 1, 2025, 9:00 AM from UTC.
Leg 1
- Flight time added: 8h 0m.
- Arrival calculated by converting UTC back to local time: Mon, Dec 1, 2025, 5:00 PM in Destination (Europe/London).
Total Travel Time: Adding every flight and layover between the first departure and the final arrival gives 8 hours (0d 8h 0m).
This process of converting to UTC, adding duration, and converting back to local time ensures the final itinerary is accurate, regardless of how many time zones are crossed.
Los Angeles to Berlin via London
An evening departure from Los Angeles with an overnight transatlantic flight, a 2-hour layover in London, and a final hop to Berlin.
- Departure: Wed, Jul 10, 2024, 6:45 PM (America/Los Angeles)
- Arrival: Thu, Jul 11, 2024, 6:10 PM (Destination (Europe/Berlin))
Total Travel Time
0d 14h 25m
(14 hours, 25 minutes)
How this example was calculated:
- Convert the departure time to UTC so every subsequent calculation uses the same baseline. For this trip, Wed, Jul 10, 2024, 6:45 PM becomes 2024-07-11 01:45 UTC.
- Leg 1: add 10h 30m of flight time to reach Thu, Jul 11, 2024, 1:15 PM. Then add the layover of 2h 0m before departing again at Thu, Jul 11, 2024, 3:15 PM.
- Leg 2: add 1h 55m of flight time to reach Thu, Jul 11, 2024, 6:10 PM. This is the final arrival time.
- The total elapsed time between the first departure and the final arrival equals 865 minutes, which is expressed above as 14 hours, 25 minutes.
Sydney to New York with Pacific Stopover
A multi-day journey that breaks in Honolulu before continuing to New York, showing how the calculator manages large time zone shifts.
- Departure: Mon, Sep 2, 2024, 9:15 AM (Australia/Sydney)
- Arrival: Tue, Sep 3, 2024, 11:30 AM (Destination (America/New York))
Total Travel Time
1d 16h 15m
(1 day, 16 hours, 15 minutes)
How this example was calculated:
- Convert the departure time to UTC so every subsequent calculation uses the same baseline. For this trip, Mon, Sep 2, 2024, 9:15 AM becomes 2024-09-01 23:15 UTC.
- Leg 1: add 9h 45m of flight time to reach Sun, Sep 1, 2024, 11:00 PM. Then add the layover of 20h 0m before departing again at Mon, Sep 2, 2024, 7:00 PM.
- Leg 2: add 10h 30m of flight time to reach Tue, Sep 3, 2024, 11:30 AM. This is the final arrival time.
- The total elapsed time between the first departure and the final arrival equals 2,415 minutes, which is expressed above as 1 day, 16 hours, 15 minutes.
