Calculation Explained
How Driving Hours are Calculated
The calculation is a three-step process to find the net time spent on the road:
- Calculate Gross Duration: First, the calculator finds the total time difference in milliseconds between the start and end times.
- Subtract Breaks: The total duration of rest breaks (entered in minutes) is converted to milliseconds and subtracted from the gross duration.
- Convert to Hours: The final duration in milliseconds is converted into hours. The result is shown in two formats:
- Hours & Minutes: A standard, easy-to-read format (e.g., 07:30).
- Decimal Hours: A format useful for logbooks or billing (e.g., 7.50).
Example Calculation
Let's break down the result based on your inputs:
- Start Time: 09:00
- End Time: 17:00
- Rest Breaks: 60 minutes
The breakdown for your entry looks like this:
- Total elapsed time from start to end: 480 minutes (8.00 hours).
- Break time deducted: 60 minutes.
- Net driving time: 420 minutes, which equals 07:00 (7.00 hours).
- Calculation check: 480 − 60 = 420 minutes of driving.
Driving Time Examples
These sample trips demonstrate how start and end times, along with break deductions, translate into the final driving hours. The steps mirror the calculator's logic so you can double-check your own entries.
Delivery Route
A driver starts early in the morning, takes a short coffee break, and finishes deliveries before lunch.
- Start: 06:45
- End: 11:30
- Breaks: 20 minutes
Hours & Minutes
04:25
Decimal Hours
4.42
How this example was calculated:
- Total elapsed time: from 06:45 to 11:30 is 285 minutes.
- Break deduction: subtract 20 minutes of rest, leaving 265 minutes of driving.
- Convert to hours: 265 ÷ 60 = 4.42 hours, which is displayed as 04:25.

Hours & Minutes
08:00
Decimal Hours
8.00
How this example was calculated:
- Total elapsed time: from 13:15 to 22:00 is 525 minutes.
- Break deduction: subtract 45 minutes of rest, leaving 480 minutes of driving.
- Convert to hours: 480 ÷ 60 = 8.00 hours, which is displayed as 08:00.
